Rationale of the Project
The monsoon floods and landslides that started
in late August 2006 left about 16,000 families in the mid
and far western region affected districts in need of assistance.
To response the emergency situation, RRN mobilised several
volunteers and resources to help the victims of this devastating
floods and landslides in different districts of Nepal. RRN
is currently implementing the project; Support to Landslides
and Flood Victims through Rehabilitation and Reconstruction
Activities in Nepal with the support from the CCO in
three districts; Banke, Bardiya and Achham districts. The
main purpose of this project is to support the flood and landslides
affected victims through rehabilitation activities.
General Objective
To support landslide and flood victims through
rehabilitation activities in Nepal
Specific Objectives
- To support sheltering materials for flood
victims
- To train the flood victims on livelihood program
- To strengthen community infrastructure
Results
1. Shelter material support to the
flood victims
The project has supported the victims with
housing materials and some basic households needs (ie. Roof.
Timber, blanket). Around 100 households from three affected
districts benefited through shelter and basic household support.
The project tried to make sure that the marginalised and poor
households were prioritised in the rehabilitation activities.
2. Community infrastructure rehabilitation
support
The project supported repair and operated
the community drinking water schemes. 40 hand pumps were installed
in Banke district, 6 schools were repaired and two irrigation
canals have been rehabilitated. Special consideration was
given while reestablishing and reconstructing community infrastructures
in particular drinking water pumps, canals and culvers so
that women and socially marginalised and poor members would
have equal access to these resources. Consultation with women
and disadvantaged groups conducted before reestablishing drinking
water pumps and irrigation facilities in terms of location
and accessibility.
3. Community livelihood support
The project also supported to establish
capitalization fund for flood and landslides affected victims.
The group members were also trained for immediate income generation
activities for livelihood support. Affirmative actions were
taken wherever necessary to ensure that the most vulnerable
women and socially marginalised groups were included in the
income generation schemes.
