materials being distributed by RRN in Sunsari district |
RRN has been
actively involved in availingrelief and rehabilitation support
to the victims and vulnerable communities of natural disaster
such as floods and landslides since its establishment in Nepal.
The number of persons killed by floods and landslides this
monsoon has reached 86, displaced more than 9,700 families
and affected 48, 000 HHs (270,000 people) from 32 districts
according to the information fronted by the Ministry of Home
Affairs, Nepal.
RRN has been mobilizing its volunteers
and resources to help the victims of devastating flood and
landslide in the districts of Sunsari, Jhapa, Siraha, Saptari,
Dang, Banke and Bardiya. A number of VDCs remain isolated
by high water levels, preventing detailed assessments from
being conducted. RRN's assessment is that Food, safe drinking
water, medicine, clothes and basic shelter are the most urgent
needs of the affected people.
RRN has been distributing food and relief
materials (Blanket, Tarpaulin, clothes and plastic mattress)
since July 30, 2007. RRN has provided food support to the
most affected 228 Households in Banke. RRN has provided 35
units of Tarpaulin to the affected families of Suryapatuwa
VDC. Relief materials were handed over to District Disaster
Relief Committee (DDRC) Saptari adequate for 200 HHs, DDRC
Sunsari adequate for 200HHs, DDRC Jhapa adequate for 58 HHs
and DDRC Siraha adequate for 200HHs respectively. RRN is planning
to provide food and non-food items to 250 HHs in Bardiya,
in coordination with other organizations.
Since it is mid-monsoon and that more rainfall
is yet to pour more people are vulnerable to floods and landslide.
Some may require to be evacuated from their home which falls
in the danger zone.
We have received information that there
is a great need for urgent response to meet the emergency
needs of the increasing number of victims in various parts
of Nepal. In this context RRN appeals to all well wishers,
funding partners, volunteer organizations, I/NGOs and benevolent
individuals to extend their cooperation to assist to bring
change in the livelihood of the victims of this disaster.
